Bridgeport Fire Marshal Alberto Hernandez, age 63, of Bridgeport, died on Monday, April 22.
“I want to extend my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Alberto Hernandez," said Bridgeport Mayor Joe Ganim. "We are all very grateful to have lived in a community where we could be under Hernandez’s protection as a Fire Marshal for the City of Bridgeport. He was a widely loved member of our community, and he will truly be missed by all who knew him."
City officials said Hernandez, a 24-year member of the fire department, had served as fire marshal for the past four years. He reportedly planned to retire next year.
“Al served as the Fire Marshal for the last four years. His laughter and jokes were one of his staples," said Bridgeport Fire Chief Lance Edwards. "He was always making light of a situation and reminding us of the lighter side of life. With over 24 years in the department, he’s touched countless lives and left just as many memories.”
In his honor, Ganim has ordered all city flags to be flown at half-staff until further notice.
Ganim said, "All are encouraged to keep Hernandez’s family in your prayers and thoughts during this time."
A cause of death has not yet been released.
